Rule of Thirds

For my rule of thirds picture I just wanted to go the simple route. Parker was playing on the beach, and I took a picture of his feet using the lines my camera has to make sure it was rule of thirds. I like how simple my rule of thirds picture is. Its definitely what it is suppose to be, and sometimes simple is good.

Leading Lines

I took my leading lines picture as Parker was going down the pole. I used the pole as my leading line, and it leads right to him. I really like this picture. The colors in it contrast perfectly, and help make the picture what it is. I did put a slight vignette on this picture just to draw a little bit more attention to his face.

Natural Framing

This picture was quite the challenge to get. I knew I wanted him up in a tree, the challenge was getting him up there. You would think that being a kid, he would be able to just jump up and climb into the tree. No, he couldn’t get into the four different trees that he tried. Instead, two of my friends are behind him holding him up, making him look like he is actually up in the tree! The two tree trunks frame his face nicely, and that fact that its a tree just makes it the most natural framing you can get.

Large Depth of Field

This was the challenging photo for me, to incorporate Parker and a wide depth of field. Finally I had him just go out on the dock, and I made sure that everything behind him was in just as good of focus as he was. I can’t say this is the best I could have done, but I tried, and I am happy with the final project.

Small Depth of Field

This not only has a use of small depth of field, but it also has a hint of leading lines. That is a bonus I would say! I like how I incorporated the beach and walkway, yet all of the focus is on him. This is the perfect small depth of field picture if I do say so myself.

Balance

In this picture I took balance to a literal sense. He was crawling along this log, and was having to keep himself balanced as he did so. As I got to thinking about balance and how it relates to my project, I came up with something else as well. To me, a child has the perfect balance. I don’t mean physically this time, I mean emotionally. Somehow, children can find that perfect balance in their life that makes them carefree, if we could all find that inner child and apply it to our lives, I feel that we would all be pretty balanced.

Different Point of View

This is a different viewpoint, obviously. I took it shooting down on him. At first a thought being a child maybe I should shoot up at him, and I did try doing so. After going through my photos though, I realized that this was the money shot right here. I shot down on him, and it still looks great.

Simplicity

A straight up photo of Parker’s face is as simple as it gets. He is a simple kid. There is really no background, just blur, and I think this picture alone incases simplicity. I keep relating these words back to children, well kids are simple, as I said in the beginning they have no worries, and they are the easiest people to read. They say what they feel and feel what they think.

My Choice #1

This was probably my favorite picture I shot all day. It was almost like he was deep in thought, yet he has this smug little look on his face. I chose this picture because to me this is my brother, this picture is Parker. He is the type of kid who is quite and shy, but you know he is thinking something in that head of his, and its usually the kind of thoughts that give him that little grin.

My Choice #2

This picture is close to second for my favorite. He is having fun, that is a real smile on his faced, not a fake one. I also like how he is in focus and the background just has that slight motion blur. This picture is my project, this picture is that carefree kid.

Business Portrait

This is my nice clean and simple business portrait. I feel pretty comfortable in the studio, and I’m hoping that this picture shows that. I feel like I could just go in the studio, shot this, and get out all in ten minutes. (Good skill to have for SkillsUSA competition might I add!) There’s not much more to say, there it is.

I had a lot of fun shooting this project. It made me think back to when I felt carefree like children do, and I really miss that and hope I  can find a piece of it again. It is sad to think this is the last photography final I will be posting. I am excited to graduate, but at the same time, its the end. As my mom told me the other day though, it is also a new beginning, a new chapter in life.

I love this picture. She was spinning in circles and so I fired off a round of shots.. I do have a little lens flare going on that I don’t like to much, but it is not to noticeable.

Why yes, this is a little of selective color going on. You have to have the shoe picture at dances, it is one of the requirements of being a teenage girl. Taylor is one of those awesome people who can pull off wearing bright orange converse to a formal dance, and so I felt this picture was more representing her awesomeness more than anything.

Another great picture of her spinning! I love her feet position in this one.

I like this one a lot. I gave it a little of a warmer feel, because it is a happy occasion. It might be better with the guy cropped out, but I decided to keep him in because it is just one of those candid shots that I like.

The corsage! Her face is just priceless. She was laughing the whole time he was putting it on. I will admit I went a bit overboard on taking pictures of this. I fired off a round of maybe 30 shots, capturing all the motion. Then narrowed it down to just this one.

I enjoy this picture. I think the glasses are hilarious and make it not the average senior ball picture. I also think the way she has her foot tilted just adds to the goofy photograph.

In the others you can see her face, and so I thought this one was different because she was facing more back to the camera

Had to get this picture. We figured this is where they would end up by the end of the night, haha ok well not really.

The last of the spinning pictures. Its always a safe call to wear shorts under your dress!

I realize I did not get her whole face in this picture, but I like it that way.

Day One:

This was the picture I used as my final photo. I really liked it as a portrait. I shot it through the dug out, and I think I captured her at just the right time. I chose to use a portrait because I wanted to try something different. I didn’t see many people doing portraits. Also, it was such a nice day I thought it would be fun to play with a little natural lighting.

This was my second favorite of the bunch. I liked the other one more though because in this one her facial expression is not as serious, its a tad goofy.

I took this because I can. Such a cheesy pic, I got a shadow, a lovely heart, and a peace sign. Woohoo triple wammy on the cheese factor scale!

I really like the lines in this picture, although I feel I lowered myself by taken the simple shoot up a tree picture. Although sometimes you just have to go back to basics right?

Day Two:

Love this picture of Katie. Just a lovely close up of her in her all natural habitat.

Yes, can you say best tree portrait in the world? I can, because that is what this is.

I really like my angle in the two above. Instead of a strait on shot I climbed up on the bench and shot down at her.

Read the whole post- You would think this would be common sense, but for some it is not. This is important when your commenting on photography blogs. For example, I will get a comment saying, “These photos are over exposed” why yes they are, and if you would have read the second line in my post saying “I over exposed these photographs on purpose” then you would know that. 

Make your response relevant and substantial- Your comment needs to relate to the post you are commenting on. Along with that, it needs to be meaningful. Don’t just say “These are great” or “This blog is awesome”. Instead, try giving something you like and why. Give a response that has feedback. 

Say what you would say to their face- Make sure what you are saying in your comment is something you would say to the persons face. If you wouldn’t want it plastered on a big billboard, then don’t plaster it on the internet. 

Be brief and to the point- While your comment is greatly appreciated (most of the time), people don’t want to read a novel of a comment. Get to your point, there is no need to repeat yourself and fill the comment with nonsense. 

Don’t be a negative nelly- Don’t just post negative comments on someone’s blog. If you don’t like what they are doing, then it is OK to tell them, but give them an actual reason as to why you do not like it. 

Don’t tear apart others work- Don’t make a comment that destroys someone’s blog. I think this is very important when commenting on a fellow photographers blog. Put yourself in their place, how would you feel if somebody tore apart your work so blatantly? You don’t need to point out everything you don’t agree with, give one or two things, explain why, and give them constructive feedback on how else it could be done. 

Those are the basics, I appreciate comments, but only when they are constructive and I can take something out of them. Even in commenting, there is an etiquette. You have to be respectful of the author and their work.

me photographs of swimmers in the swim classes that I am helping coach at the Kroc Center. I love photographing swimmers, there is just something about them that is intriguing to me. My focus was on getting their arm muscles and sweet tattoos involved in the pictures along with the great freestyle swim stroke. Most of the guys who swim have really interesting tattoos and I thought it would be different to get some of those in their stroke.

I did the basics to all of these photos. Shot in RAW, about a 250-500 shutter speed. Then I loaded them all into lightroom and adjusted the white balanace along with exposing them a little more.

This one is my favorite, in fact I used it for my ad design for my senior project. I like how I have the tattoo and his stroke, and have also got his face in the picture, just makes it more personal.

I really enjoy the angle in this picture, I was down at pool level when I took it, and love how it turned out.

I like this one because it shows the coaching going on. I kept the stuff at the top because I felt like it added to the picture. I didn’t like it as much when I cropped off the top.

I over did the blacks in this picture because it really made the water stand out and I liked the effect.

This is another that just shows the one on one coaching that we give our swimmers at the Kroc Center.

I didn’t write too much about each picture, because for once I think it’s nice to let the viewer have their own opinions and just view the picture without my commentary on every one of them.

I will not regret you- I think most high school girls, maybe guys as well, have this feeling at least once throughout high school. We all have our first “love”, or our first real relationship, and then we all feel like we mess it up. In the end, we all say that we will not regret it, but we never say it out loud for some reason. It is what we tell ourselves over and over, in hopes that one day, we won’t.

This by far is my favorite picture. Too me it is not just in the words written on her hand, but it is in her eyes. It has been said that your eyes are the portal to your soul. I know that may sound a little cheesy, but it is true. I think that some people have the ability, more than others, to show their emotions with their eyes. Sadii is one of those people. When I was going through the pictures I took of her, the first thing I noticed was her eyes. They are intent and almost have a sadness to them. All around, I love this picture, it is exactly what I was going for in this project.

I’m done- There comes a point where we all just want to drop everything and scream at the top of our lungs “I’m done!”. High school seems so hard, but then we hear from all adults, “Trust me, I’ve been there, it is not the best time of your life, it won’t matter in ten years.” We get told this so much, yet we don’t believe it, because teenagers live in the present, we live in the drama and pressure that high school has become. We think that no one understands us, we think that we are all alone, the best we can do is make sure that we don’t let it get to us.

This is right up next to the picture of Sadii. It was a close one for my favorite, but came in second for my personal preference. The day we shot this, she had a bad night before. Honestly, because of that it made this picture what it is. Once again, there is just a sadness in her eyes that helps to capture what her hand says.

I fail- I’m pretty sure everyone feels like they fail at some point in their life. For a teenager, this can mean a lot. You can be failing a class, or failing in a different sense. So many teens, and people in general feel like they are failing at life. There comes a point where you don’t know where your going or what you are going to do. Life moves on without you, and you don’t know what to do.

At first I was not sure how this picture was going to turn out.  Bailey was not sure what to write on her hand so we put in a group effort and thought about it. After looking at the pictures, I really do think she related to the words on her hand. There is that sadness in her eyes that I was going for.

I’m falling- The feeling of falling can be a thrill, but when your in high school or getting through those terrible teenage years, falling is the scariest thing in your life. At a point, some of us feel like there is no one there to catch us, and picking ourselves up is an even scarier thought, so we just let ourselves fall.

I always really enjoy taking pictures of Jordan. She is so photogenic. I’m not sure I quite captured the look in her eyes as I did with the other three, but there is a reason for that. She didn’t know what I could write on her hand, and therefore we thought of something. Because of this, it was not as personal to her. Still a good picture, but could be better.

When I thought of this project, I was thinking it would just be a week long project and then I would move on, but after putting it together, it absolutely needs a continuation. I also realized that the eyes are more important then the words on the hand. Now I know to make sure that has more of my attention, and that if I can, to capture the eyes at just the right moment.
